In Norse mythology, Yggdrasil represents a brain. I know I sound crazy but let me explain. Painful sacrifice is necessary for the growth of wisdom. The structure is central to the universe as it is to the individual. And finally, all of its creatures have their place yet move from root to branch making connections.
Odin sacrificed himself to himself. It happened on Yggdrasil the world tree. So, Odin both did a sacrifice on the world itself and made a sacrifice to the world itself by giving his body as fertilizer to Yggdrasil. There's more to this than just the location. It's a nature sacrifice.
Odin is a god of wisdom and Odin wants more wisdom. So, he sacrificed himself to himself to gain the wisdom he sought. He stabbed himself with his own spear and hanged himself from Yggdrasil. With this act he gained the knowledge of runes. The metaphor holds true for all of us as individuals. (Nikos)
Yggdrasil acts like the brain of the universe because it is literally the core of the universe. If it goes down, the universe go's down with it. It also holds all the worlds in Norse mythology.

The animals that live in the tree also represent knowledge. Birds represent the creation of knowledge. The squirrel is the transfer of knowledge. The deer is reserving of knowledge, and the snake is the destruction of knowledge.
It's all connected to knowledge in some form.
