The hell of Dante's Inferno is a series of rings in descending order getting smaller and smaller and hell is below the earth.

Every ring has it's own unique geography. One ring has a never-ending windstorm. Another is a river of boiling tar with people constantly being dunked in it.ONe is a forest of living trees that are transformed people. A different ring is constantly on fire and the final ring is frozen. Actually, the deeper you go the colder it gets. It's the opposite of the modern thought of hell.

The cause of the cold is the work of one of the denizens of hell, the devil himself. His flapping wings are freezing the lower rings of hell, and he also froze himself. There are more monsters in hell. Like the monster with the head of a man and the body of a hideous beast and tail of a scorpion whose poison can kill anyone who touches it.
