Let's talk about Odin's sacrifice of himself to himself. First off let's start with the location of the sacrifice. It happened on Yggdrasil the world tree. So, Odin both did a sacrifice on the world itself and made a sacrifice to the world itself by giving his body as fertilizer to Yggdrasil. There's more to this than just the location.

Such as the nature sacrifice. Odin is a god of wisdom and Odin wants more wisdom. So, he sacrificed himself to himself to gain the wisdom he sought. He stabbed himself with his own spear and hanged himself from Yggdrasil. With this act he gained the knowledge of runes.
