The war to end slavery was unnecessary slavery would have fizzled out on its own. Slavery as a system stops the process and growth of businesses. This is because if manpower is something that you have to worry about people think of better ways of doing things. If you can solve the problem by just throwing more slaves at it there is no need to come up with new ways to do things.

Let's not forget that any slaves that made it to the north were not legally allowed to be returned the south. That made it so it was even worse for businesses that used slaves. Any slaves that ran away was a big hit to the money of their owner. The fact that slaves were a non-renewable rescores made it so that any economy that was built on slavery was destined to fail.

For these reasons are why every other country got rid of slavery with no war. Slavery as a system destined to fizzle out because it is just too expensive to maintain in the long run.
